Cantonese Opera at Foshan Ancestral Temple

Cantonese opera is one of the traditional Chinese operas listed as intangible cultural heritage. It is popular in the Pearl River Delta and other places where Cantonese people live. Foshan is not only the birthplace of Cantonese Opera, Foshan Ancestral Temple is a masterpiece of Lingnan architecture, which adopts a large number of Shiwan tiles and ridge ceramics, brick carvings, grey plastic, inlaid ceramics, wood carvings, as well as stone carvings, shaping a variety of stories and characters, birds, animals and flowers, etc., with novel concepts and detailed carvings. This group of photos was taken in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, at the Ancestral Temple.  Although the rain was pouring down, it did not dampen the people’s love for Cantonese opera. It was because of this tenacity and enthusiasm that I braved the rain to capture these wonderful moments.

This series of photos shows the performers’ devotion to Cantonese opera and the audience’s love of traditional culture and the unique beauty of Lingnan architecture.

“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”
