Crystal Clear Life
“Crystal Clear Life is a photo story by Liu Ming about her two trips to Semporna in three years.
Semporna used to be a remote fishing village in Sabah, Malaysia, and later developed into a world-famous underwater tourism centre.
She visited Semporna for the first time in late 2019. She did some research before the trip and had a general idea of the people and life in the area, but when she arrived in Semporna, she was deeply moved by what she saw and heard!
Everything in Semporna is a miracle. There are people unloading boats, doing business, the seafood market is bustling. The early sunlight in the colourful houses and its reflection on the water. The workers with tanned faces and bodies, packing the fish into the basket and then sending it down to the boat fishermen. The little children play in the water while their parents work outside. They are full of an energy and simplicity that touches her deeply.
Surrounding the turquoise waters of Semporna are several small green islands inhabited by a people without a nationality known as sea nomads, the Bajau.
The Bajau have lived in these waters for generations. There are no hospitals or schools here, and they live in small huts built on the shallow beach, eating small fish and shrimps from the sea.
