Gloria Boscaini has a professional background as a high school language teacher, textbook writer and University lecturer of Italian Literature in Poland.

Since her teenage days her main interest has been exploring the continents and their diverse cultures, which she has done over the past 50 years as a serial (mostly solo) traveller. She has methodically documented her wanderlust with the objective to preserve her personal memory:

“Pictures remind us where we’ve been and give other people somewhere to go to” (Carol Jerrems, 1976).

However, in spite of the vast accumulation of photographic material, only the recent encounter with the magazine BETA developments in photography and GPU (Aphrodite Title) encouraged her to showcase a selection of her images.

Native peoples, tribal villages, abandoned settlements, graffiti and animal skeletons stand among her favourite subjects. Lately Gloria has felt especially attracted by black and white, an inclination due to the search for essentiality.

“Maybe my eyes are tired of colour”.

Painted silos

Acres and acres of grain grown in miles and miles of flat farmland. And dozens of huge storage silos built in the 1930s in small towns along the railway network of the so called ‘Wheat Belt’. Characteristic structures that mark the empty landscape of northeast Victoria (Australia) and tell stories of human labour.

The transformation of the silos from purely functional to artistic objects started about 10 years ago, drawing with it the revitalisation of otherwise dying rural communities.

Now, gigantic murals painted by recognized artists on these grain towers stand as an amazing outdoor gallery in what is commonly known as the ‘Silo Art Trail’.

Far from their coloristic value emphasised in the tourist brochures, I propose instead a perspective in monochrome intended to underline the poetic power that their history transmitted to my eyes.

“Photography is an austere and blazing poetry of the real.”
