About photos

Maiji Mountain locates about 50 kilometers south of Tianshui City, Gansu. It is a solitary peak in Xiaoshan Mountain and is 142 meters tall. The name of the mountain, Maiji, in Chinese means “piled sheaves of wheat”. Maiji Mountain is of typical Danxia landform,1,742 meters above sea level. There are 221 caves with10,632 clay sculptures and more than 1,300 square meters of murals. It is famous for its exquisite clay sculpture art, known as the Oriental Sculpture Art Exhibition Hall. Maijishan Grottoes is one of the four largest grottoes in China, and the other three are Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes, and Yungang Grottoes. It is also the most beautiful among many caves and temples in China and is most famous for its seven Buddha Pavilions, Ten Thousand Buddha Cave. Maijishan grottoes retain a variety of information on religion, art, and architecture, presenting in the form of vivid Buddha statues and murals about Buddhist stories, reflecting the spiritual enlightenment of Buddhism in the real world. Therefore, from the perspective of the Buddhist culture carrier, Maijishan Grottoes is undoubtedly a three-dimensional “Buddhist Culture Exhibition Hall” with a history of more than 1600 years. It has promoted Buddhist culture for thousands of years, becoming one of the four famous grottoes in China. Tianshui, located in the southeast of Gansu province, has been an essential stop with strategic military importance on Silk Road since ancient times. The city spans the Yangtze River and Yellow River basins, and the new Eurasian train runs through the city. There are four distinct seasons, cool in summer and warm in winter. The landscape is beautiful and charming. The author spent more than 30 years photographing the natural scenery around Maiji Mountain in Tianshui. The photographic works of Maiji Mountain in spring, summer, autumn, and winter are exhibited all over the world
